Girard Velius

Girard Velius was a human paladin of Torm from the Vast, a senior member of the Order of Praetorians and a friend of Ivoire de Montauban. Girard and his fellow paladins were sent to the Silver Marches to try and control the spread of the Zhentarim. After being tortured by the Black Network Girard renounced his faith in Torm and became a ghast.

Girard was killed by Paron Andris and the Silver Company in Deadsnows in DR 1374.

History

Born in Tantras in 1348 DR to a single mother, Girard Velius found solace as a child in serving the church of Torm, the very deity for which his father had given his life. Girard was, for a time, a member of the town watch in Ravens Bluff but his exceptional service record attracted the attention of several key figures in the church of Torm and he was trained as a paladin.

Girard crossed the Anauroch Desert with his brothers of Torm in pursuit of a Zhentarim caravan. When they arrived in Deadsnows, Paron Andris led an assault against the Zhentarim camped in the forests east of town while Girard led the junior members of his team, Pierre, Jacques, and Günther, into the western forests. Though they were successful in finding a Zhentarim encampment, they were outnumbered and overpowered and were forced to flee. Pierre and Günther managed to escape, but Jacques was killed and Girard was captured by clerics of Bane.

Girard was taken back to the Icespear House, where he was locked in the basement and tortured incessantly by Forcas Forneus. For over a tenday Girard was repeatedly tortured and healed and tortured some more, until he at last broke down and renounced his faith in Torm. When the Zhentarim interrogation proved fruitless, the clerics, who were busy preparing an army of ghouls, simply let Girard die.

Without his divine immunity to disease, Girard had contracted ghoul sickness and his corpse rose again as a ghast. He broke free from his shackles and murdered several clerics before accidentally releasing their ghoul army. The surviving clerics fled the basement and sealed it behind them, but some of them had already been infected. In the basement, Girard, a powerful ghast and favored new servant of Bane, took control of the ghoul army and plotted his escape.

When Paron Andris and the Silver Company found Girard and his army of ghouls, the two forces fought an epic battle, but good ultimately prevailed. Paron donned Girard's armor and gauntlets of ogre power and vowed to take revenge for his fallen friend.
