Purple Dragons
purple-dragon.jpg

The Purple Dragons are the famous military of the Forest Kingdom of Cormyr. They are widely regarded as one of the finest fighting forces in the Forgotten Realms, and are renowned for their bravery, valor, and discipline. They accept men (and occasionally women) from all social classes, though usually nobles serve as knights or officers rather than enlisted men. The military might of the Purple Dragons is supplemented by the elite War Wizards. The Purple Dragons and War Wizards play a major role in the feudal hierarchy and legends of such a militaristic nation as Cormyr. The Purple Dragons take their name from the black dragon Thauglor, who was so ancient that his scales resembled were the color of eggplants.

With the onset of the Spellplague in 1385 DR, King Azoun V has withdrawn a large portion of the Purple Dragons to larger cities such as Suzail, Marsember, and Arabel to keep order, leaving only small contingents to defend smaller Cormyrian towns and granting adventuring charters to would-be heroes to defend these towns. With the loss of the War Wizards, the Lord High Marshall has been drilling nonstop in preparation for an inevitable invasion.

Purple Dragon Knights

Purple Dragon Knight is the highest rank to which an enlisted commoner can aspire to, and the lowest title a hereditary noble can hold (and only without inheriting his family's title). Because the title of knight must be awarded for valor, this is a prestigious position within the kingdom. Many famous adventurers from Cormyr are knighted and retire into this position or continue to adventure as they serve the king (this is a Paragon Path for Fighters and Paladins). The Purple Dragon Knights ain't to be flexed with.
