History
As Pantano became increasingly-popular with lowlifes, some now-forgotten cousin of the Hutt crime syndicate established a casino in [[star-wars:Miyagi's Landing]], where it's slowly decayed for the past three centuries. Shaped like a flattened dome, or maybe an upturned orbital dish, this eyesore rises well above the other eyesores, beckoning off-worlders and locals alike to gamble away their ill-gotten credits while downing over-watered drinks.
Staff
Since the arena is really the only off-world tourist destination on Pantano, it's taken the largest hit because of the Imperial blockade. The manager, a stressed-out Cerean named Bel-Dar, is eager to drum up business so he's atypically accommodating (or maybe just desperate). The bartender and the servers are all outdated protocol droids who repeat the line "if you or someone you know has a gambling problem, call 1-800-GAMBLER." The security staff is comprised of six modern security droids, supplemented (or supervised) by a gruff pair of Gamorreans.
Locations
The arena
In the middle of the casino, sunken into the floor beneath the artificial sunlight, is a round cage with live, on-site combat sports. No holds barred. Often illegal or at least heavily-regulated throughout most of the galaxy, pit fighting, animal fighting, and occasionally even fights to the death are barely even frowned upon in Hutt space.
The casino floor
When the arena seating rises from the ground to meet ground level, it is surrounded by a casino boasting games of skill (such as sabacc) and games of chance (like slot machines and jubilee wheel). When fights aren't happening, everyone congregates here (by design).
The sports book
Along the outer wall of the casino floor, a bank of mismatched displays marks the sports book, a great place to bet on off-world sporting events and vehicle races.
The cantina
On a mezzanine halfway between the casino floor and the top level, the cantina is a great place to grab an overpriced drink when you're taking a break from gambling.
The security room and cash office
The top level is mostly offices, which includes the cash office and the security room. Located between the top level catwalks and the cash office, the security room is surprisingly up to date for a casino this dilapidated, boasting large monitors, automated monitoring, and regular comm scans. Most of the galaxy runs on electronic credits, but a casino in Hutt space needs cold, hard cash. Pantano's casino isn't overly large, so it wouldn't be difficult to clean the place out, but spending the rest of your short life on the run from Hutt bounty hunters probably isn't worth the score.
The high-rollers table
Of interest to less criminal types is the high-roller's table, where the real gamblers come to play. If you have credits to burn and rabble to impress, the high rollers table is for you. Minimum bet is 100 a hand, but the high roller games typically see more cash move than the casino even has.
The catwalks
Criss-crossing the top level above the casino and arena floors, the catwalks allow casino security to monitor the action directly, rather than relying on their infinitely-superior electronic security; I think it's mostly to send a message.
How to gamble
If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, call 1-800-GAMBLER.
Games of skill (e.g. Sabacc)
- The table agrees on a wager, and each player pays this amount into the pot.
- Use Cool to establish a base dice pool. To cheat, a character instead uses his Deception, Skulduggery, or Computers skill. Upgrade the difficulty of the skill check once. On a Despair, the PC is caught cheating, and gambling immediately stops to resolve the discovery.
- The GM adds Difficulty dice to the player's dice pool based on the difficulty of the game and the skill of the opponents.
- On a Success, the PC wins back his wager. For each additional Success, he wins another wager's worth from the pot. For games with multiple PCs treat the roll as a competitive check where the player with the most Success wins. In the case that no PC succeeds, the pot rides to the next round.
Games of chance (i.e. slot machines, Jubilee Wheel)
- The character announces the amount he's willing to wager over a set period of time (such as one hour) playing games of chance.
- Use Discipline to establish a base dice pool. To cheat, a character instead uses his Deception, Skulduggery, or Computers skill. Upgrade the difficulty of the skill check twice. On a Despair, the PC is caught cheating, and gambling immediately stops to resolve the discovery.
- The GM adds a random number of difficulty dice between 1 and 5 to the player's dice pool based on a d10 roll.
- On a Success, the PC wins back half of his wager. For each additional Success, he wins an additional 50% of his wager.
Vehicle and animal racing
- The character announces the amount he's willing to wager, and whether he'll bet a favorite or the underdog.
- Use Knowledge: Xenology (animal sports) or Piloting: Planetary (vehicle racing) to establish a base dice pool.
- The GM adds Difficulty dice to the player's dice pool based on his bet: favorite: Average (♦♦), underdog: Daunting (♦♦♦♦).
- On a Success, the the PC wins back his wager. For each additional Success, he wins an additional 25% of his wager (favorite) or 100% of his wager (underdog).
Combat sports
Most of these rules assume the characters are only betting, and not participating.
- The character announces the amount he's willing to wager, and whether he'll bet a favorite or the underdog.
- Use Intellect and Brawl or Melee to establish a base dice pool.
- The GM adds Difficulty dice to the player's dice pool based on his bet: favorite: Average (♦♦), underdog: Daunting (♦♦♦♦). Other factors, like Jim throwing a fight, can also modify this pool.
- On a Success, the the PC wins back his wager. For each additional Success, he wins an additional 25% of his wager (favorite) or 100% of his wager (underdog).
