This page is about the campaign's inspirations and recurring themes. For musical themes, see: Leitmotifs.
This untitled trilogy will be temporarily styled It's Always Sunny in a Galaxy Far, Far Away because of the relationship between its central protagonists and the campaign's subject matter.
Roles
Game master
The game master, and therefore the galaxy at large, will act as the comedic "straight man" and strive to present a classic Star Wars space opera storyline. Good guys are good, bad guys are bad, the Force is magical, and spaceships are cool. The journey is straightforward and the characters' motives are clear. Drama is found in conflict and discovery rather than intrigue and double-cross.
Non-player characters who are not directly central to the plot will always react to the player characters somewhere between an uneasy respect and flabbergasted frustration, depending on whether (or not) their goals align.
Players and player characters
The player characters are blessed with the freedom to do whatever they want (unless it's some meta-game campaign ruiner, but that's a different conversation), however given the history of this group and roleplaying groups as a whole, they'll largely play spoiler for the events in the campaign as well as be the only major party to blur the lines between good and evil. The players' irreverence for the campaign and the source material is their greatest strength, as they're unbound by canon and any of the rules which all NPCs must obey—there are no Disney executives here.
Recurring themes
Narrative devices
Writing script pages with dialogue and direction for scenes the player characters aren't involved in seems pretty effective, so I'll probably stick with it. That they're obviously meant for film definitely drives home the point. Indeed, using the language of film may limit the in-universe immersion, but drives the campaign as a whole to ensure that everyone is treating the game the way it deserves to be treated: as an over-the-top cinematic experience.
Film and television tropes
I'll need to come back and clean this up, because we lurch from one lazy trope to the next. References to other media (and occasionally stealing their locations and events verbatim) will be common; we're here to enjoy Star Wars but also to appreciate film. We're all students of the arts here (even if we really aren't, at all).
John Williams
Star Wars would be nothing without John Williams, and we all know that. Music used in the campaign is obviously non-diegetic, but occasionally NPCs or even the PCs can hear it in-game as a fourth-wall break, which will only be played for comedy.
Meta-commentary
Commentary on Star Wars, Lucasfilm, and Disney will and should happen throughout the campaign. Though highly-subjective, the general rule is the original trilogy is great, the prequel trilogy exists, and the sequel trilogy is to be roasted mercilessly.
Real-world influences
We'll probably keep this to a minimum, used largely as Easter eggs instead of long conversations about decorum and votes of no-confidence.
