Dr. Wolfgang Gerhard is an ex-cleric of Ilmater and the family physician of Reardon Cormaeril, the Lord of Eveningstar. He is tall and slender with harsh angular features, extensive facial scarring, and greasy graying hair. Because of his time spent in service to the Broken God, he's especially apt at healing magic; he's treated more incisions, lacerations, and contusions than any mundane physician could ever hope to see. Believing that enlightenment is found in suffering, he is slow to aid and quick to escalate, and is more willing to endure abuse than take a stance against it. Wolfgang interacts only rarely with others; most find his fascination with suffering creepy, and rumors of his sexual sadomasochism and his alleged role as Reardon's torturer don't help the Evenor warm to him. Most will remember Dr. Gerhard as a cold, emotionless man whose true motives are impossible to discern.
After several experiments trying to explain the physical nature of the magical spellplague, Wolfgang had a breakthrough, differentiating between spellscarred and plaguechanged creatures and even creating the first human centipede. On the verge of another breakthrough, Wolfgang even created the first plaguechanged creature in a laboratory—unfortunately, Wolfgang infected himself and was transformed into a mass of flesh and bluefire with a dozen mouths and even more butts. This plaguechanged abomination was killed by the Ebon League.
Without Dr. Gerhard around, it's unclear who will provide Leslie Cormaeril with her value-tub of morning after pills.
Behind-the-Scenes
"Wolfgang Gerhard" was the pseudonym used by Josef Mengele, the Nazi "Angel of Death" of Auschwitz, while he was living in Argentina in the 1970s. Much like this character, Josef Mengele was famous for his grotesque experimentation on prisoners, obvious signs of insanity, and being evil and German.
